Fourth Wall Studios, a firm that has created transmedia marketing extensions for movies like Watchmen and Eagle Eye, will launch an “alternate reality entertainment” studio with $15 million in funding.
The financing comes from Patrick Soon-Shiong, a healthcare magnate who may be better known for buying Magic Johnson’s share of the Los Angeles Lakers franchise, last year. The deal also enables 4WS to access Soon-Shiong’s $200 million California Capital equity fund to finance individual projects.
With the infusion, 4WS will roll out a slate of projects over the next year that will combine transmedia stories, massively multiplayer social games and persistent augmented reality worlds for both original intellectual property and derivative IP in partnership with others. 4WS is comprised of Elan Lee, Sean Stewart, and Jim Stewartson.
