Boy Genius Report this morning scored a scoop when it noticed a PDF on Verizon Wireless’s site revealing the carrier’s plans to throttle data speeds for subscribers who fall within the top five percent of its data consumers. As my colleague Kevin Tofel noted, that strategy makes sense as VZW prepares for the increased network congestion the iPhone is sure to bring. But the operator isn’t helping itself by burying the news on its site — instead, it should be proactively telling its most voracious data users about its plans, and it should be giving them tips and tools to help them cope. There’s no way to ease network congestion without irritating some users, but VZW should be educating its users — not trying to hide from them.
