News Corp. Adds John McKinley As CTO

News Corp.

On the eve of The Daily‘s launch, News Corp (NSDQ: NWS) is emphasizing the importance of news products and technology across the company by appointing John McKinley chief technology officer. McKinley, the product and tech lead for the new tablet publication, will also be president of technology for News Corp Digital Media Group and will report to Jon Miller in both roles. His responsibilities:

developing new digital products and working “closely” with Miller and other execs “to extend the Company’s core media businesses into the digital space.”

Miller and McKinley have worked together before. McKinley was CTO and president of digital services at AOL (NYSE: AOL) while Miller was CEO. McKinley also has held top tech jobs at Merrill Lynch and GE Capital. He’s not all BigCo tech exec, though. He’s also an entrepreneur, founding online service OurParents, and has been an active early-stage investor. The combination should help with the mix of needs at News Corp. but does it make him the best bet for new products?
