Key digital move in 2010: Tribune’s travails extend to its digital business, which went through a major reorganization in 2010. The company laid off nine top digital executives and appointed sales exec Don Meek to lead Tribune Digital. The previous regime under former Clear Channel exec Marc Chase missed the mark, and Tribune’s executive council chose Meek to “drive more revenue in the short term, while positioning us for future growth.” One of Meek’s moves was to narrow the unit’s 50 projects to fewer than 10 “core initiatives.”

How we generated our estimate: Outsell put Tribune’s 2009 online revenue from its news operations at $218 million. Assuming that the company’s online advertising sales increased in line with the overall display market in 2010, sales now total about $248 million.
