The paidContent 50: The Most Successful Digital Media Companies In The U.S.

13. Zynga

U.S. 2010 digital revenue: $850 million

Snapshot: Zynga’s lineup of social games — including CityVille, FarmVille and FrontierVille — are played by more than 50 million people a day, primarily on Facebook. That dependence on the social network was judged by some to be Zynga’s achilles’ heel, but after fighting over how Zynga would use Facebook Credits in its games, Facebook and Zynga settled their differences, announcing a five-year “strategic relationship” in June. The company’s enormous success has inspired myriad other, non-gaming companies to “gamify” their own products.

Key digital move in 2010: In late 2010, Zynga followed up on its hit social game FrontierVille by releasing CityVille. Within less than a month, CityVille had exceeded FarmVille in popularity, making the new game the most popular app on Facebook and proving once again that Zynga was the undisputed leader in its space.

How we generated our estimate: In February, the Wall Street Journal cited a person familiar with the social game company’s finances as saying its sales were $850 million in 2010. We do not know what the geographic breakdown is.
