U.S. 2010 digital revenue: $530 million

Snapshot: WebMD dominates the online health-publishing market. In addition to its flagship network of consumer sites, which reach more than 80 million unique users a month, the company also runs a network of sites for physicians and healthcare professionals. Its primary rival is Everyday Health, but that company’s revenue and traffic don’t come close and, in 2010, Everyday Health withdrew its plans for an IPO, which would have established it as a publicly traded counterpart to WebMD.

Key digital move in 2010: In March, WebMD introduced a new social-networking platform — the WebMD Health Exchange — so that visitors on its main site could connect with experts and other WebMD users to discuss their health experiences.

How we generated our estimate: 2010 revenue was $534.5 million, up from $438.5 million in 2009. The vast majority of WebMD’s revenues come from the U.S.
