News Corp. Sets ‘The Daily’ Launch For Feb. 2

The Daily has switched coasts and launch dates but not the idea of a museum as a venue. Originally scheduled (but not formally announced) for Jan. 19 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Rupert Murdoch’s latest experiment in digital journalism will go live Feb. 2 at the Guggenheim in New York, according to invites that hit inboxes today. There’s also been a switch in key players.

Steve Jobs, now on medical leave, was to appear with Murdoch at the launch. Instead, iTunes guru Eddy Cue will represent Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). One thing hasn’t changed: as James Murdoch affirmed earlier this week, subscriptions to the News Corp iPad ‘paper’ will run 99 cents weekly.

News Corp (NSDQ: NWS). reportedly is investing $30 million in the new tablet effort, which has more than 120 staffers and is based in the company’s Manhattan headquarters. The launch has been tied to Apple’s plans for adding subscriptions to the ITunes store, making the event as much about Apple as News Corp.
