GeekChicDaily, an e-mail newsletter devoted to all things pop culture, is loading up on more funding and friends in Hollywood and beyond.
GCD is closing on a new round of investment including Joe Roth, founder of Revolution Studios, and striking a strategic partnership with Legendary Pictures, production company behind blockbuster films including The Dark Knight and The Hangover. In addition, another guy with real expertise on the newsletter business, Thrillist CEO Ben Lerer, is joining GCD’s advisory board.
GCD was launched in October 2009 by digital-minded entrepreneur Peter Levin, Wizard Entertainment founder Gareb Shamus and Mandalay Entertainment Group CEO Peter Guber.
Joining Roth for the new round are Internet pioneer Mike Slade, Machinima CEO Allen DeBevoise, Gamespy founder Mark Surfas, Pilot Group managing partner Andrew Russell and Legendary Digital president Kathy Vrabeck. Returning investors including Clear Channel (OTCBB: CCMO) chairman Robert Pittman, who has made newsletters like DailyCandy and Thrillist an investment priority.
GCD didn’t disclose how much was raised in the new round, but the investment will be used for “infrastructure, further brand extension and marketing,” according to a release.
