One more new Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) product could be making its way to Verizon, on top of the iPhone that the two finally, formally announced earlier today. Verizon will soon also be selling a version of the iPad that works on its network.
Earlier today, Verizon’s CFO, Francis Shammo, confirmed to Bloomberg that the operator is preparing to also offer a version of the iPad that works on Verizon’s CDMA network.
A date for the launch, however, was not given.
The current version of the iPad has 3G connectivity built in, but it only works with UMTS-based networks like AT&T’s. Verizon iPad users were only able to connect to Verizon’s cellular network by using a MiFi credit card-sized device.
Verizon has up to now been selling the iPad device for $630-$830, and this alone presents a big opportunity: Goldman Sachs projects sales of over 37 million iPads next year.
Personal Hotspot included? One (and perhaps the only) device feature that Verizon has so far boasted about compared to AT&T’s iPhone is the “Personal Hotspot” function. This works like the current “Internet Tethering” option on a normal iPhone 4, but it extends the service to work for up to five different devices. It’s not clear if this service will also be available on iPad devices, too.
Verizon has not yet given details of pricing for iPhone, or indeed iPad, services.
