Clicker.com’s Best of Clicker 2010 Awards may start being recognized as the online video world’s awards season kick-off, announcing audience favorites — for the second year running — from the wide world of content available online, including TV, film and web original series.
The complete winners list is below, but of the fifteen categories of shows being recognized, eight are devoted to web originals, including two categories for comedy (serialized and episodic), best web music show and latest favorite viral video.
Because the awards are purely audience-generated, the results indicate not necessarily quality but fan engagement — reflected in the winners list by the triumph of shows like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and House over more critically recognized favorites.
Over 200,000 people voted in the awards, according to Clicker CEO Jim Lanzone, and voting volume was split relatively evenly between TV and web content. However, the most popular web shows, including The Guild, Legend of Neil, Anyone But Me, Riese: Kingdom Falling and Asylum, had vote totals that far outpaced those for most broadcast and cable TV shows.
In addition, for web shows, more voting traffic was generated via Twitter than Facebook. Twitter chatter for the last week indicated an extremely tight race between Anyone But Me and Asylum, for example, with Anyone But Me‘s proven fan base helping it to secure the win this morning.
“Web series are more like startup bands in the music space,” Lanzone said via email. “They are closer to their audiences, engage them more directly, pivot their shows based on feedback more, but ironically are also more true to their vision because no one is looking over their shoulders.”
