Nokia Ovi Store: Three Million Downloads Per Day

Nokia may not have captured the mobile zeitgeist in the same way that Android or Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) devices have, but don’t leave it down for the count: the company today reports some encouraging numbers on the Ovi app store: three million downloads per day, with 400,000 developers now working on the platform. But it is still a ways behind Apple, which is averaging around 10 million downloads per day.

The company is in an aggressive mode in its push to convince the public that it is growing: these are the second lot of figures to be released in as many months. In October, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) reported 2.3 million downloads per day on Ovi. These new figures take into account usage on the company’s newest devices such as the N8, running on the latest version of the Symbian OS.

Pointedly, Nokia is not releasing numbers on how those downloads break down regionally, although this is likely to follow sales patterns for the devices themselves, with the U.S. taking up a relatively smaller portion of the traffic. It has, however, published a list of the top apps by region without numbers.

Other numbers released today:

— 92 developers have now seen more than 1 million people download their apps.

— The most popular free app globally is Q Torch, which turns your device into a flashlight, made by CellApp Technology of India.

— The top downloaded paid app was (surprise, surprise) Angry Birds, from Rovio Mobile of Finland.

— The most popular app in North America was the AccuWeather Widget.

Hi, I work for Nokia. This milestone for Ovi Store is a step towards the more integrated Ovi Experience that is coming, including richer mobile experiences for consumers and a more compelling business proposition for developers and partners.

True that we have not yet captured the “mobile Zeitgeist,” but I would like to point out that the CEO of Ovi Store content provider BLStream said they are “on track to exceed App Store performance even though we’ve been there longer.”

Our goal is to make every Nokia phone a smart phone with locally relevant apps and content, and that is a significant opportunity given we have 1.2 billion consumers and a global footprint. Stay tuned.
