Ian Wright, early Tesla employee and founder of high performance electric drive train startup Wrightspeed, has raised $5 million to build out his extended-range hybrid electric drive technology. Wright, who left Tesla to found Wrightspeed, has a passion for high performance electric vehicles and has big ambitions for his drive train technology, including one day to sell it to race car developers and medium duty truck makers.
Earlier this year we caught up with Wright as he drove his X1 electric prototype car — an early version of the drive train that will be the heart of a high performance hybrid he calls the Supercar — around the track at the Laguna Seca raceway. The car can go 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, while Tesla’s Roadster can go 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds. No wonder he schooled the Tesla Roadsters on the track. Check out our video:
