MySpace

Here’s our take on some of the latest news at the intersection of technology and entertainment:

» MySpace (NSDQ: NWS) ad sales: The struggling social network didn’t just get a new coat of paint last week; there’s a lot of changes going on under the hood on the ad-sales side as well. This is going to be of interest to studio marketers who have always done some pretty interesting customizable promotions on this platform, which even in decline is too big and entertainment-oriented to be discounted in any online ad buy [ClickZ].

» Cross-platform buys: MediaVest agency vet Donna Speciale predicts to Fox programming chief Kevin Reilly’s face that his network will follow The CW down the path of the cross-plaform ad sales, which ties TV and online broadcasts into one buying opportunity. Reilly’s seemed dubious in his response, which means CW could remain the only canary in that coalmine. Some other great quotes here from a panel discussion filled with Hollywood heavy hitters. » 3D video: Have we learned nothing from ex-CNN chief Jon Klein’s oft-derided hologram gimmick (Election Day, 2008)? It’s actually pretty fascinating technology that could catch on, but not anytime soon; “close” is a weird choice of headline wording for something the article makes clear is nowhere near ready for primetime. Laugh now, but at CES 2016, this will be the cat’s meow. [CBSNews]

» Anti-piracy tech: Nifty new weapon in the war against movie piracy is developing a secondary ability to monitor moviegoers’ emotions. It’s basically a camera that can not only detect any other camera smuggled into a theater aimed at the screen, but be a handy way to do a little consumer research. Pure evil genius. [Torrentfreak]

» Mobile study: The media and entertainment sector turned out to have both the highest number of users and more time spent from surveyed mobile users, topping some stiff competition: consumer products/shopping, financial and travel. [Release]
