So far, there is only one Windows 7 tablet on the market, but Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) CFO Peter Klein said during the company’s earnings call Thursday that he was “confident” that the rise of tablets will expand the market for PCs, saying he was “enthusiastic about our opportunity” and harping that consumers will continue to turn to Windows for “choice and value.” Executives also said that to date they had not seen a “material” shift from low-end PCs to tablets (translation=Apple’s iPad).
They said to expect a “pipeline of innovation from our partners” for Windows on new types of devices. Executives did not, however, provide any details on when these new devices might come to market.
Some other highlights from the call: Executives barely mentioned the company’s mobile efforts, alluding only twice to the launch of Windows Phone 7.
As for the company’s online division, Klein said it would continue to outperform the market (It’s not clear what he means by “outperform,” however; the 13 percent increase in online ad sales Microsoft reported seems to be very much in line with the growth the sector overall is seeing).
