Media and tech blog network GigaOm has raised $2.5 million fourth round of funding, according to an SEC filing (via Techcrunch). The participants in the round included Alloy Ventures and True Ventures.
News of the round comes a day after AllThingsD announced it was hiring GigaOm’s Liz Gannes, the founder of its broadband video news site NewTeeVee, to cover the social media beat.
It’s not clear what GigaOm plans to do with the proceeds. Having raised a total of about $8.3 million by this point, Techcrunch speculates that the blog network may start to do some small acquisitions again.
Updated: In a post acknowledging Techcrunch’s scoop, GigOm founder Om Malik shoots down the site’s musings about how it will spend its new cash. “No, it is not for acquiring smaller blogs,” Malik says. “Instead, it’s about the future.” In essence, that means building out more technology and hiring more reporters.
