Next Issue Media Opens Silicon Valley Outpost With Trio Of Nokia Execs

Next Issue Media, the media JV that is aiming to create a digital storefront for magazines and newspapers, is finally putting down stakes in Silicon Valley.The new office will serve as the center of its technology development work. In addition, Next Issue has made four additional hires to its executive team, three of whom were most recently at Nokia (NYSE: NOK), working on the mobile device maker’s Ovi portal. Next Issue is backed by Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith (NYSE: MDP), News Corporation (NSDQ: NWS) and Time (NYSE: TWX) Inc.

Except for the hiring of former TiVo (NSDQ: TIVO) president Morgan Guenther as CEO in June, things have been fairly quiet at Next Issue the past few months.

The four new execs are:

— Keith Barraclough: CTO and EVP of Products. Most recently, Barraclough acted as GM of Nokia

  1. Interesting choice of hires. It would suggest that NIM intends to be very competitive to rather than working with Apple. The consortium faces a significant challenge with the creation of yet another digital newsstand when Apple is likely to roll out their own and Zinio has one that’s well established. Publishers will have to balance ubiquity of content distribution with the specific differences and advantages of different platforms.
