Michaels, the biggest craft chain in the U.S., is making a small digital acquisition, buying up ScrapHD, a site that lets users collaborate on online scrapbooks that they can later print out. In explaining the acquisition, Michaels refers to fast growth in the “digital photo book market.” (Indeed, attracted by that growth, venture capital firms have put money into several online scrapbook startups, including Smilebox and Scrablog). Michaels says it will relaunch ScrapHD under its own name — and on its own site — next year.
