Spanfeller Media Group is finally pulling up the curtain on the name of its first content site, a food vertical called The Daily Meal. The site will launch on Oct. 15 and will be run by one-time Saveur editor and Gourmet columnist Colman Andrews. Former Forbes Traveler managing editor Valaer Murray will serve as The Daily Meal’s ME.
The company, headed by ex-Forbes.com CEO Jim Spanfeller, closed an estimated $2 million first round in July.
Once The Daily Meal is up and running, SMG will launch additional food sites, as well as other verticals, one at a time. Eventually, it hopes to be able to manage simultaneous launches of two or three sites per vertical as SMG gets more established. SMG expects to build a staff of about 15- to 20 people.
While Spanfeller has heard plenty about how crowded the online food space is, he believes that creating a “mega-site” aimed at “cooks, food lovers, wine connoisseurs, discerning diners and everyone in-between” with the idea of blending blend eating in and dining out in a single destination for all things food will be enough to separate it from the competition.
