DeNA Makes Third Foray Into U.S. With Mobile Acquisition

Japanese-based social gaming company DeNA has made its next strategic move in the U.S. turf war between themselves and Zynga. DeNA has acquired Gameview Studios, which makes mobile games for the iPhone, including Tap Ranch, Tap Fish and Tap Birds. The acquisition is the third such move DeNA has made in the U.S., also having recently invested in Aurora Feint and purchased IceBreaker.

The battle between the two social game companies is well-funded: DeNa has a $27.5 million fund for investing in social game startups, and Zynga has raised $150 million in a new funding round from Softbank, one of the largest telecom operators in Japan .

DeNA said Gameview Studios fits with their strategy of growing their mobile footprint through MiniNation, the company’s strategic subsidiary in the smartphone market. Gameview, which was previously called Bayview Labs, also has plans to expand beyond iPhone with new apps coming soon for the Android market. DeNA says its social gaming community called Mobage-town has more than 20 million subscribers and is expected to clock about $1 billion in revenues this year. It has also formed partnerships with Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) and Namco Bandai.
