YouTube, which has live broadcasted a few high-profile events over the years, appears ready to expand its live offerings dramatically. The site says it will will live broadcast content from four partners — Howcast, Next New Networks, Rocketboom and Young Hollywood — over the next two days.
YouTube is calling this a test and it says that “based on the results … [it will] evaluate rolling out the platform more broadly to our partners worldwide.”
It’s clear, though, that YouTube wants to become a big player in live broadcasts — something which fits into its greater strategy of adding more premium content to the site. In addition to the live events it has broadcasted in the past, it also bought online video platform Episodic earlier this year, which was best known for its partnership with Showtime to broadcast live sporting events online.
