Public Radio Exchange Raises $2.7 Million

Public Radio Exchange, a non-profit which operates an online marketplace that independent radio producers use to upload content so that it can be licensed by public radio stations or accessed by individuals, has raised $2.7 million in funding from three non-profits. PRX says it will use the cash for a “strategic expansion” of its services.

Already, PRX has used its library of independently produced programming to launch a new XM radio station called Remix; it also says Remix will soon be available as “a broadcast, HD, mobile, and internet service.”

The company is also behind several other public radio-related experiments; it has developed a popular Android and iPhone app called Public Radio Player, which aggregates local public radio station streams across the United States, and is also in the process of developing a mobile app platform, which it says is “designed to make robust app development more accessible to a growing number of stations and producers.”

The new support comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which has awarded PRX a two-year, $1.5 million grant; the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which is giving the company $900,000 over three years; and the Ford Foundation, which is providing PRX with $300,000 over one-year. Here’s the announcement, which has more details.

And here’s a video overview of what PRX does:
