Sporting News Today has been on the iPad for months via the Zinio newsstand. But Sporting News is trying to expand the discovery — and revenue — potential of its daily online magazine with a variation on the theme: a branded iPad app offering hundreds of pages of sports coverage for $2.99 a month.
“We started with iPad and will kind of work backwards,” Sporting News Publisher Jeff Price explained, preferring for now to focus on the commuters and other iPad owners who want a rich and interactive reading experience. In the meantime, the Zinio version available on the iPhone.
The free app includes a sampling of content and access to issues through a Zinio account. Single copies purchases go through the Zinio store on Safari and are priced to encourage subscriptions — $1.99 an issue compared with $2.99 for 30 issues in the store or the monthly subscription through the SNT app.
The daily issue is delivered at 6 a.m. ET. It’s fairly vanilla for now but SN promises video, photo galleries and an interactive scoreboard in coming weeks. The distribution partner is still Zinio; National Geographic Magazine and National Geographic Traveler also launched similar apps powered by Zinio Tuesday.
