WebMediaBrands (NSDQ: WEBM) is going in-house for its latest expansion, launching a MediaBistro spinoff called SportsNewser, which will feature “breaking news and analysis of the sports media business,” as well as “interviews with prominent broadcasters, athletes and industry executives.” It’s the first site WebMediaBrands has developed internally since launching future of publishing blog eBookNewser in early December.
Since then, however, WebMediaBrands has made three acquisitions, buying up All Facebook-owner Social Times, social media news site RotorBlog , and social media trade show firm 3rd Power LLC.
SportsNewser will face competition from other sites that cover the same topic, including Mediaite’s SportsGrid and SportsBusiness Daily, among others. But Meckler tells us SportsNewser stands apart. “SportsBusinessDaily is close but is more into pure business of sports whereas our intention is to really hit hard at the business of media and not the business of sport,” he says. “As for Mediaite’s entry: it is more of a gossip column than a serious analysis of sports media news.”
A spokeswoman tells us the site will be staffed by several freelancers. Alex Weprin, the co-editor of WebMediaBrands’ TVNewser and editor of WebNewser is listed as editor.
