Research In Motion has bought Cellmania, an 11-year-old company which distributes a huge repository of content — like ringtones and video files — as well as apps to mobile operators. It bills its service as “a complete turnkey white label content system with content management, digital rights management, and over-the-air delivery.” AT&T (NYSE: T), Boost Mobile, Telefonica (NYSE: TEF), Sprint (NYSE: S) and Orange, among others, are customers.
In a short statement on its site, Cellmania doesn’t say exactly how it will fit with RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) but does say it will “continue to bring our expertise in application storefront development to the BlackBerry platform.” The company was founded by Ronjon Nag, a former VP and general manager at Motorola.
The acquisition was first reported by TechCrunch.
