Tencent, the Chinese internet company behind IM service and portal QQ, has bought up Comsenz, a Google-backed company which is behind the Discuz online discussion board platform, which is extremely popular in China, among other community products. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) had invested $1 million in Comsenz two years ago. It’s one of several startups Google has backed in China. Others include video site Xunlei and music service Top100.
In a release on its site, Comesenz says it will now operate an a subsidiary of Tencent and that its executives will stay in their current positions. China-focused research firm PacificEpoch cites local news sources that put the price between $25 million and $50 million. Comsenz had raised more than $10 million in funding from backers including Sequoia Capital.
