Traffic to the Twitter.com website more than doubled last year, according to the latest results from comScore, with more than 92 million unique visitors visiting the site in June 2010. The fastest-growing market was Latin America, where usage of the social networking service grew by more than 300 percent. Asia Pacific, which has been one of the fastest-growing areas for Twitter usage in the past, came in second with growth of 243 percent, and the Middle East, Africa and Europe all saw traffic growth of more than 100 percent in June over the same period a year earlier.
Indonesia had the highest penetration of Twitter usage, comScore’s data showed, with more than 20 percent of Internet users in that country visiting the website in June, followed by Brazil and Venezuela with 20 percent and 19 percent respectively. Venezuela’s adoption of the service could have been driven in part by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s decision to join Twitter in late April, comScore said.
Growth in North America, meanwhile was just 22 percent. This is likely an indication of how much that market has matured over the past year, but also a result of comScore’s traffic measurement being restricted to the Twitter website rather than mobile applications or web services.
Twitter said at its Chirp developer conference in April that 75 percent of the demand it sees for the service comes not from the website but from applications — both mobile and web-based — and services that use the company’s API (application programming interface). Traffic-ranking firms such as comScore don’t count that kind of access, although comScore did look at traffic to the Twitter site from mobile browsers: the U.S. had the highest penetration of the six countries comScore measured, with 8.3 percent of smartphone users accessing the site on the mobile in June.
