BringMeTheNews, a local news startup based in Minneapolis, has raised $1 million in funding from business information firm The Dolan Company and Twin Cities’ PR firm Padilla Speer Beardsley. The startup primarily aggregates news pieces from local publications like Minn Post and the Star Tribune on its flagship site; it uses those reports in part to produce radio newscasts, which it syndicates to various radio stations in the state.

The company, which was founded a year ago by local TV news anchor Rick Kupchella, makes money by selling space on its site to sponsors who want to distribute their own news and information. For instance, a photo on BringMeTheNews showing a boat on Lake Minnetonka is sponsored by the state-run Explore Minnesota website, as is an article on the state’s “Mississippi monster.” MinnPost says sponsors, who sign on for at least six months, also get a shout out during the newscasts.

Kupchella tells MinnPost that his startup is profitable but needed additional cash in order to support a plan to expand operations beyond Minnesota, as well as to launch a sports division, The company currently has 12 employees.
