The mobile security firm Lookout is making headlines today with news that free Android apps are scraping users’ personal information and sending it to China. More than six dozen wallpaper apps in Android Market glean info such as phone numbers, SIM serial numbers and voicemail numbers from handsets and transmits the data to a server that is registered in Shenzhen, a tech hotbed. While it doesn’t appear the info has been put to any nefarious use — yet — it is the latest proof that security is quickly becoming a major concern in the smartphone world. That concern is especially valid in Android Market, which doesn’t employ the kind of filters that Apple uses for its App Store.
