Awesome Screenshot: A Chrome Extension That Lives Up to its Name

If you’re going to call your new product Awesome Screenshot, it really does need to be, well, awesome. Fortunately, Diigo‘s Chrome extension actually fulfills its billing, by providing a handy toolbar button that lets you capture and annotate web pages, similar to screenshot tool Skitch.

Usefully, when you click the button you can decide to either capture just the portion of the page visible in the browser window, or the entire page. Next, a new toolbar opens at the top of your capture. There’s a crop tool, and you can add lines (both straight and freehand), rectangles, ellipses, arrows and text in a choice of colors. Additionally, there’s a blur tool — very handy for removing personal or irrelevant details from your captures — and an undo button for removing any annotations that go awry.

Once you’re happy with your annotations, click the “Done” button and you can save the image to your computer. There’s also the option of uploading your capture to image hosting service pict.com; a link is provided for sharing over IM or email.

Here’s a quick demo video showing the extension in action:

It’s worth pointing out that unlike tools like Skitch, Awesome Screenshot can only capture web pages, not anything else on your screen. However, for web designers, bloggers or anyone who occasionally needs to capture or provide feedback on web pages, Awesome Screenshot is very handy, fast and free — it’s highly recommended. You can download Awesome Screenshot from the Chrome extensions gallery.

Awesome Screenshot adds to Diigo‘s useful collection of bookmarking, research, information management and collaborative tools, which are also worth checking out if you haven’t seen them before.
