There’s no shortage of innovative strategies to improve data center energy efficiency, which you’re undoubtedly aware of since you hang around here. However, this latest gambit from Yahoo even caught me off-guard. According to Rich Miller at Data Center Knowledge, Yahoo is toying with the idea of eliminating UPS and backup generators — a drastic, potentially disastrous decision for most businesses. The plan’s saving grace? Like Google, Microsoft and other companies with huge, massively replicated data center footprints, it can route around outages. Bottom line: expect this strategy to only take off in the biggest of corporations, provided that their IT infrastructures can shut down gracefully and failover seamlessly.
