Shopkick Raises $15 Million For Its Location-Based Shopping App

Shopkick, which is behind a highly-anticipated mobile app that will send offers to shoppers when they are near a store, has raised $15 million in a second round led by Greylock Partners. Shopkick has already lined up several major retailers, including Best Buy and Macy’s, as partners for its app will launch later this summer. It sounds from a recent profile of the app in the WSJ as though it may compete with check-in services like Loopt, Gowalla and Foursquare, all of which hope to make money by pitching deals to users when they are near specific establishments.

The company’s first app is CauseWorld, which lets users earn money when they check-in to stores, which they can then donate to select charities. It’s been downloaded more than 550,000 times.

Shopkick is headed up by Cyriac Roeding, the former EVP of mobile at CBS (NYSE: CBS), who joined Kleiner Perkins as an entrepreneur-in-residence in September 2008.

The company, which operated as Cross Platform Corp. for awhile, had raised $5 million in a first round from Kleiner Perkin’s iFund and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman last summer.

Hoffman, who subsequently joined Greylock as a partner last fall, is joining Shopkick’s board as part of Greylock’s investment. Kleiner Perkins, Citi Growth Ventures & Innovation Group, and Ron Conway’s SV Angel also participated in the round.
