Pasadena, Calif.-based TweetUp has acquired both Twidroid and popurls to help beef up its search and advertising platform that identifies the best tweets on the web. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Twidroid is one of the most popular Twitter clients on Android, having generated more than 250,000 downloads for its free version. A paid version, which costs $3.99, has generated between 10,000 and 50,000 downloads. TweetUp has renamed the apps to Twidroid to “ensure minimal confusion with products from Lucas Films, trademark owner of the term ‘droid’.” It also acquired Popurls, which aggregates items from the New York Times (NYSE: NYT), Twitter, Digg, Delicious, Flickr and other sites.

TweetUp’s search capabilities are used by TechCrunch, Topix.com, and BusinessInsider.com, and soon, the company said tweeters will be able to bid on keywords in a competitive marketplace very similar to search engines on the Internet. TweetUp has also inked search agreements with various companies, including Twitter clients, such as TweetDeck and Seesmic. As they come online over the next few weeks, TweetUp says the clients and websites will bring search results to more than 40 million unique users per month and serve more than 100 million impressions a month.

TweetUp is a product of Idealab, and is backed by Index Ventures, betaworks, Steve Case
