Adobe this week rolled out the the long-awaited Flash Player 10.1 for mobile. Android-based devices need to be running version 2.2, aka Froyo, in order to support the new player, and in announcing its release, Adobe said the following phones are expected to be updated to Android 2.2: Motorola Droid, Dell Streak, Google Nexus One, Motorola Milestone, HTC Evo, HTC Incredible, HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S.
Also this week, Toshiba released the first-ever Android-based smartbook — a thin, light notebook designed to be used primarily for online work — dubbed the Toshiba AC100. But while Android is built from the ground up to be operated by touch, Toshiba is instead including a trackpad and mouse buttons to drive the interface. The AC100 also uses the Opera Mobile browser in place of the standard Android browser, perhaps also due to the lack of a touchscreen.
And Verizon and Motorola officially launched the Droid X this week at a press event in New York City. The newest member of the Droid line of smartphones will be available to consumers starting in July for $199.99 with a two-year contract with Verizon. Unfortunately, it will ship with Android version 2.1, but indications are it will receive an update to version 2.2 very soon.
