Where to Watch Wimbledon 2010 Online

UPDATED Wimbledon 2010 kicked off today, and if you’re a tennis fan, there’s no doubt that you’ll want to watch the matches live. But for many tennis fans in the US and UK, the matches take place during work hours — which means that unless their workplace has the luxury of a TV (and one that’s not already tuned to the World Cup), they’re probably trying to watch the matches online.

But for all the tennis fans out there, there’s some good news and bad news.

The good news is that the official Wimbledon site has live video coverage of all the matches. But the bad news is that the list of places where live video from Wimbledon is not available is almost as long as the list of nations where you can watch from the official site. Due to broadcaster restrictions, live video on the Wimbledon site is not available in the United Kingdom, United States and all Central and South American countries (including Argentina, Brazil and Mexico), Canada, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Spain, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Caribbean, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, New Caledonia, Brunei, North Korea, Burma (Myanmar), Pakistan, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, China (P.R.C), South Korea, East Timor, Singapore, Sri Lanka, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Macau, Malaysia and Maldives.

That said, there are some choices. In the US, Wimbledon matches will be available online live and on-demand through ESPN3. Unfortunately, just as with the World Cup, ESPN3 restricts viewership to ISPs that it has struck an affiliate agreement with. So customers of Comcast (s CMSA), Verizon (s VZ), AT&T (s T) and Cox will be able to watch the matches, but Earthlink, Cablevision and Time Warner Cable (s TWC) customers will not.

In the UK, things are a lot simpler. Thanks to the wonders of public broadcasting, live video coverage of Wimbledon should be available on the BBC’s tennis site.

UPDATE: In addition to the live online streams of Wimbledon matches, Livestream is streaming daily live interviews from the Official Live Wimbledon Interview Room through July 4.
