The Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) – Demand Media rivalry is now apparently showing itself in a slogan. We reported yesterday that Yahoo had filed to trademark the phrase “Science + Art + Scale” shortly after it came out that Demand Media’s Joanne Bradford, who quit Yahoo in March, was using “Science, Scale and Soul” as the title of her Internet Week presentation. Yahoo didn’t get back to us about whether its move to trademark the term was related to Bradford’s use of a similar phrase.
Demand Media, however, just wrote in to tell us that one of its executives, Steven Kydd, titled a December guest column he wrote in MediaPost, “The Future = Art + Science + Scale.” Yahoo says in its trademark application that has only been using “Science + Art + Scale” in its marketing since mid-March. So maybe it can’t exactly call dibs?
