Component shortages for such things as chipsets and displays are hampering the ability for both Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and HTC to build enough phones to meet demand.
HTC has said that when the Incredible sold out on Verizon Wireless networks it was due to supply chain constraints for some hardware components, mainly displays from Samsung Electronics. Meanwhile, the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint’s network is also suffering from temporary shortages. But now, Motorola told a group of reporters at an Executives Club presentation in Chicago that it too is affected, reports Reuters. Motorola’s Co-CEO Sanja Jha said: “(Droid) sales are going extremely well. If I could build more I’d sell more.”
Word of shortages come just as photos leak out of what could be the follow-on to the Droid. ZDnet reports that the phone remains almost identical, except for a few new things: raised-button keyboard and the lack of a gold-colored directional pad.
In addition, Jha said this year’s phone line-up would include two to four phones with front facing cameras, a trend that is gaining momentum with the release of the EVO 4G and Apple’s iPhone 4 coming this summer.
