Sprint Says 4G Phone Experiencing ‘Temporary Shortages’ After First Day

Sprint launches first 4G phone, the HTC Evo 4G

Sprint (NYSE: S) was reluctant to quote any figures, but said the HTC EVO 4G now holds the carrier’s record for selling more phones in one day than any other device. Sales beat records previously held by the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre, and before that, the Samsung Instinct.

Sprint says the strong sales have led to “temporary shortages” at several retail locations, and while that’s somewhat a badge of honor, Sprint and HTC were quick to say that they are diligently working to increase inventory and that shipments are arriving regularly. Specific figures would be better, but Sprint did say the number of EVOs sold were three times greater than both the Samsung Instincts and Palm Pres sold over their first three days on the market.

Whether the pace will continue or not is unclear. The phone’s release may have just gotten ahead of the new iPhone, which is expected to be announced on Monday by Apple (NSDQ: AAPL).
