AppCity Is Latest App Store To Launch

Appcity

The latest independent distributor of mobile apps: AppCity, a European startup which is billing itself as having the “largest global catalog of smartphone apps.” Visitors can use the site to search — and download — more than 225,000 apps for the iPhone, Android, Nokia (NYSE: NOK), BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, although I couldn’t find some common apps like Pandora and Facebook. (Also worth noting that trying to download an iPhone app just redirects to the iTunes store).

The site — which is available in English and French — says it will offer subscribers an “unlimited monthly plan” for free and paid apps, although it doesn’t say how much that will cost. Sounds like the company is also eyeing a similar strategy as fellow app distributor GetJar, which has built app stores for third parties like Sprint (NYSE: S), Virgin France, Opera Mini and Carphone Warehouse. AppCity says it too plans to “develop vertical mobile app stores for brands, media companies and mobile carriers and create a broader destination for app developers.” The company was founded by Paul Amsellem, who sold mobile marketing firm CellCast Interactif to Silverback Media three-and-a-half years ago.
