Sports Illustrated converted some of this week’s issue into a slick in-browser HTML5 edition in time for the Google (NSDQ: GOOG) I/O keynote kickoff. Terry McDonell’s demo (embedded below) shows the magazine building on last fall’s slick tablet version developed with The Wonderfactory but this time designed to work within Chrome, not as a standalone app, highlighting the ability to develop across devices. For Google, it was a high-profile way to promote the potential for content in its upcoming Chrome Web Store. (The notes on YouTube include a list of everything used to create this version — and one that thing that wasn’t: Flash.)
As it did in the fall, SI‘s presentation drew oohs and aahs. Both have one other thing in common: they’re strictly for show. When will consumers actually be able to use one? Stay tuned. I’m told Time Inc. (NYSE: TWX) will be announcing plans for the SI iPad app in the next couple of weeks with plans on track for an early summer appearance in the iTunes store. My bet’s on late June.
