I consider myself a very sympathetic person, but I have a hard time mustering much pity for companies feeling burned or burdened by their decisions to utilize cloud computing and/or SaaS. The lack of standards, security protocols and interoperability are well known, and have to be considered before making the cloud move. It’s little use crying over them after you’ve already committed, and customer adoption before such measures are in place doesn’t exactly encourage providers to change their ways. The same goes for contractual terms: read them carefully, decide whether they’re palatable, and act accordingly. But don’t assume service providers are out to do users any favors.
