I’m happy to see the growing discussion around clean-energy-powered data centers. Facebook deserves most of the credit for spurring the discussion as a result of its decision to buy energy from a primarily coal-powered utility, but a recent Greenpeace study shows that Facebook is far from alone when it comes to buying “dirty” energy for data center projects. As I wrote in January, energy efficiency is a laudable goal, but it’s misguided if the energy source is the same. Data centers are becoming big business, and their operators should have the market power (if not now, then soon) to start demanding that utilities invest in renewable sources, or that the government credit them for producing their own clean energy.
