Google may be getting all the press with its plan to roll-out high-speed fiber in select cities, but there are other projects in the works that can have a drastic impact in how fast and feature-packed smart grid communications networks become. In Chattanooga , Tenn., fiber is integral to a plan to offer residents “quadruple play” packages that include smart grid services. Now comes word that Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University is embarking on a research project that will study how an open access model to super-fast fiber impacts public safety, education, health services and smart grid tech in low-income areas.
