The week marches on and today being Saturday means it is time to recap the recent happenings in the world of Windows Mobile. Microsoft has finally shared some details on the Windows Phone Starter Edition that we first mentioned weeks ago. The Starter Edition will be based on Windows Mobile 6.5, not the new Windows Phone 7, and will be offered in emerging markets. There will be two SKUs, with and without Office Mobile. Starter Edition will support these radio bands: 2G (GSM), 2.5G (CDMA2000 xRTT, EDGE, GPRS), CDMA (Rev A, EV-DO Revision A), and TD-SCDMA. Windows Phone Starter Edition phones will start appearing this year, but no information was shared who will make them.
Adobe surprised quite a few folks with the announcement this week that Flash 10.1 support would not be coming to Windows Mobile 6.5. This was an about face from earlier indications that the new Flash support would indeed come to the currently available version of Windows Phone. The company claims that WinMo 6.5 lacks the oomph to support the new Flash, so only Windows Phone 7 will get it. Microsoft has already stated that the first version of Windows Phone 7 will not get the new Flash, so it is anybody’s guess when the platform will actually see the light of Flash.
Motorola CEO Dr. Sanjay Jha said in a recent interview that the company is open to producing Windows Phones once again. Jha didn’t go into any details to lay out what needs to happen for Motorola to jump back on the Windows Phone train, but it’s good to hear the door is open. Motorola has been focusing on the Android platform, and with the Cliq, Droid and Devour under its belt a Windows Phone 7 handset would be a nice addition to the company’s product line.
