Today in Cloud

There was talk last month about the possibility of establishing standard performance benchmarks cloud-computing services. Today, MaxiScale took the initiative by announcing its contention that file-reads-per-disk-per-second is the optimal metric for gauging file-delivery cost-effectiveness for cloud applications. We should applaud MaxiScale for starting the discussion on this particular performance indicator, at least, but the cloud market really needs an industry-wide benchmark organization to develop and conduct appropriate tests. Relevant benchmarks would help customers decide which provider(s) to use, but letting providers or vendors unilaterally dictate what matters is a recipe for confusion.
