If Washington’s legislature is smart, it will pass proposed legislation that targets data center operators’ business by giving them 15-month tax exemptions on capital and energy expenditures. Data centers tend to be located in rural areas, where they can be significant sources of jobs, tax revenues and overall economic growth. What’s more, Washington’s geological features and geographical location make it a favorite state for web companies to build in. And then there’s the fact that the data center industry is not going anywhere anytime soon. From a purely economic standpoint, data centers are good news, and I’m glad to see some in Washington now are trying to keep them there.
