DataSphere’s Mystery Strategic Investor: Fisher Communications

Datasphere in Seattle

When hyperlocal startup DataSphere raised $10.8 million in early January, the company said it had raised the cash from Ignition Partners as well as two unnamed strategic investors. The company has now revealed the identify of one of them: Fisher Communications, which owns a series of TV stations and radio stations in the Western U.S.

Fisher says it has invested $1.5 million in DataSphere, which helps media companies set up hyperlocal sites and monetize them; Fisher CEO Colleen Brown is also joining DataSphere’s board. The two companies already have close ties, since Fisher has used DataSphere’s platform to launch 82 hyperlocal web sites linked to TV stations the company owns in Portland, Eugene and Seattle. Here’s the release (via TechFlash).
