Assuming the new Zinio iPhone app does indeed presage a deal to distribute digital magazines on the upcoming iSlate, we could be in for an interesting showdown over the future of print periodicals on digital platforms. Zinio’s full-color editions are advertiser friendly, but are limited to devices with color screens. Readers based on black-and-white e-paper displays like the Kindle and Plastic Logic’s new Que are easier on the eye but are unlikely to be as popular with advertisers. For publishers, it could come down to an ad-driven model on color screens but with limited distribution vs. a subscription-driven model on more screens but fewer ads.
