The FCC last night informed lawmakers that it will miss the deadline for delivering its national broadband plan, asking for a one-month extension. The news came just hours after Chairman Julius Genachowski came by GigaOM’s San Francisco offices for a one-hour discussion during which he said getting the plan right is one of his biggest priorities. It should be: broadband is quickly becoming the backbone of telecommunications in the U.S., and its presence in our lives will increase dramatically over the next few years (even in some ways some of us won’t notice). Genachowski and his team haven’t been on the job long, and the National Broadband Plan will be an enormously complicated item. It’s good to see the FCC take their time and make sure they get it right.
