Today in Cloud

While reading NetworkWorld’s list of Google’s toughest competitors, it occurred to me that because it’s competitive in so many areas — and that these products are tied into advertising revenue — Google doesn’t have to be a leader in all of its ventures in order to be highly profitable. One interesting omission, however, is Microsoft as a cloud computing competitor. After all, Azure will be a more direct competitor to App Engine than is EC2, and Microsoft is better positioned to attract the enterprise users Google seems to want so desperately. Of course, Azure has to be available before it can be a real threat, and that date has been pushed back again — to April 1.
