Google’s “openness manifesto” received a lot of coverage today, and Google evangelist Don Dodge made comments to the press about Google being an entirely data-driven company. When read in tandem, a picture starts to emerge of Google as a cold, calculating company hiding, at least to a degree, behind a facade of rainbow colors, altruism and free meals. While this might surprise some casual Google followers, it shouldn’t shock or offend anyone following web or general IT infrastructure. After all, every discussion about Hadoop or real-time web or algorithmic trading is really about leveraging mountains of data to make the best-possible decisions. I’m just happy Google is eating the dog food, as the saying goes.
